Traveling With Covid-19

I had such great travel plans for the Spring of 2020!

The last weekend in March, my boyfriend Jim and I were going camping or four glorious nights at Country Thunder Kissimmee music festival.  We were going to be “roughing it” in a tent (albeit with a blow up bed, blow up couch, and, yes, air conditioning), eating campfire food, meeting new fellow campers, and listening to some of our favorite country music artists.  What fun!

Then, in late April, I expected to be enjoying a relaxing river cruise with my best friend and frequent travel partner, Jeanie. We’d spend 3 fun-filled days in Basel, Switzerland before boarding the Viking Kara and sailing down the Rhine River through parts of France and Germany before ending up in Amsterdam for three days, just in time to see the beautiful tulips.  We would even be lucky enough to be in Amsterdam for Liberation Day, a festival only held every five years marking the end of the Nazi occupation during the Second World War.  From what I’ve read, this celebration includes somber ceremonies marking the sacrifices made by the Dutch people.  It also features lots of food and great music throughout the beautiful city of Amsterdam.  I’m sure it would have been great fun.  I’ll miss traveling along the Rhine River, exploring the Black Forest and the Marksburg Castle, among other excursions, and sampling the wonderful wines of Alsace.

But then came COVID-19.  Though I’ll miss all the great things we had planned, I know the plans had to be cancelled for the safety of all and I’ve accepted that.

So what am I going to do?  Well, Jim and I intend to visit local beaches and state and national parks closer to home.  We like road trips, so if the pandemic doesn’t get any worse, we’ll be traveling the state of Florida, looking for new and exciting places to tell you about.  And if COVID-19 cancels those plans too, we will stay home, chill around the pool, watch The Voice and reruns of The Big Bang Theory, and play board games.  And that’s ok too!  When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.  And have some wine too.  Yes, lots of wine!
