Automatic tipping: Here’s what you can do about it

Automatic tipping is becoming more common and certainly affects travelers as well as other consumers. Tipping tends to be a confusing ritual, especially for visitors from countries and cultures where it is uncommon. Many shops and restaurants in America now actively solicit tips from their customers by printing suggested amounts on the receipt.

But automatic tipping takes it to the next level, and the gratuity can be almost invisibly added to the total due. Christopher Elliott, a USA TODAY correspondent has some tips of his own about how to deal with this practice.
