“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

TravelHaven Journal – From Orlando to Malaga, Spain

Recently, a friend and I traveled from Orlando to Malaga and stayed near Estepona. We traveled during off season (January 11-19), so some things weren’t open, but the best part about going during off season was that there were no crowds! Some people would consider that a disadvantage, but for us, since we had never been there and wanted to see the small towns and take a few side trips, it was perfect! We were told that the drive from Malaga to Estepona, which took us about an hour, would take three hours during season. Many Brits vacation in southern Spain because it is close and they like the beaches there.

I have to say that the beaches are very different from the beaches here in Florida. The sand is gray/brown and the beaches are very rocky. I think we are really spoiled here in Florida with our beautiful beaches.

We rented a car in Malaga. I would definitely recommend getting an automatic unless you are an expert at driving a stick shift because the roads in the cities are very narrow, many of the towns are on the top of a mountain, and driving a stick shift would be very difficult. I was glad we had an automatic! It was quite costly (about $600 for a week, as opposed to about $350 a week for the manual transmission) but I think it was worth the additional cost.

I’ll write more about the various towns we visited in my next blog, but for now . . . safe and happy travels to you!
